With new studies, scientists can now confirm that solar energy can be stored for up to 18 years. Thanks to this radical scientific breakthrough, solar-powered electronics can now become a part of our daily lives.
Scientists at a Swedish university have created an energy system that can capture and store solar power for 18 years and release heat whenever needed. Researchers then used this to successfully develop a concept at the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, in creating this system to produce electricity by connecting it to a thermoelectric generator. This means the system can use solar energy to produce electricity regardless of the weather, time, season, and location. The solar energy system created at this university is known as MOST, Molecular Solar Thermal Energy Storage Systems.
This technology uses carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen molecules that change shapes when they come into contact with sunlight, which then shapeshifts into an energy-rich isomer that can be stored in liquid form and used when needed. A catalyst then releases this saved energy as heat and it’s ready to be used again.
The Swedish researchers then sent their design to colleagues at Shanghai Jiao Tong University where this energy was released and converted to electricity. Essentially, this generator is an ultra-thin chip that can be integrated into various electronic devices, such as headphones, smartwatches, and telephones. This device could replace batteries and solar cells.
The Beauty Of Stored Solar Energy
The best part about this newly designed system is that it works without causing any carbon dioxide emissions. This system has great potential for use in renewable energy. But first, work has to be done so it will be cost-effective to produce and widely launched. Only then will it be an option to be adopted by everyone.
With significant advances like this, it gives us hope that this can be used commercially one day, although we still have a long way to go.
