On June 3, 2022, the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere were the highest, ever recorded in the history of mankind as determined by scientists. Currently, the level of Co2 is 50% higher than in the pre-industrial era before human beings started burning oil and coal for their use.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials say the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere now is more than what has been found in over four million years. The concentration of this gas peaked in May. That’s because countries around the world continue to pump carbon dioxide through power plants, farms, and vehicles. As a result, it reached nearly 421 parts per million in May.
The Implications Of An Increase In Carbon Dioxide In Our Atmosphere
As the levels of carbon dioxide keep increasing, our planet keeps heating up. This causes extreme heat, drought, wildfires, and floods in various parts of our world.
Evidently, the growth of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere shows how little progress countries have made toward limiting this gas. The goal set in Paris was to limit warming up to 1.5 degrees Celsius. That’s because it’s the threshold beyond which scientists say includes a higher likelihood of catastrophic effects of climate change occurring.
